Playing Hooky

Well, I flew to North Carolina bright and early yesterday morning! My best friend, Erin, goes to an itty bitty school here and this is my first time visiting her. I wouldn't be skipping school to see her if she weren't the best best friend ever.. But I DEFINITELY wouldn't have flown by myself, that was crazy scary and I had no clue what I was doing. I think I had approximately 92 people tell me to take a chill pill, and maybe two actually talk me through the process of making my way through the airport. That being said, it has been super awesome to meet all of her friends and experience a college life that is completely different from my own.

You may be wondering where a college student came up with enough money to buy an airplane ticket, well that is the best part of this blog post.

I had the opportunity to nanny for a CRAZY awesome family this summer who was CRAZY generous.

One evening that I was not typically scheduled to nanny, the family asked if I could watch all five kids and bring a friend while they attended a wedding. Erin came along with me that evening, and at the end of the night we had a good long chitchat with the parents, talking about school and life and the fact that I hadn't been able to visit Erin at school, unlike her who had been to visit me at Ball State several times.

The end of the summer rolled around (way too quickly) and I was nannying for the very last time before I headed back to school. I got my check for the week and then another check.

I was thinking something to the effect of, "Why is he handing me two checks? I don't think they forgot to pay me last week..."

As the dad handed the second "mystery check" over to me, he said, plain and simple, "go visit Erin". That's it.

As you can imagine, I was in complete and utter shock when I looked down and saw "$400.00". I was at a loss of words and a simple "thank you" just felt so inadequate. My brain was running wild as I thought of how I could repay them, but nothing can repay that amazing act of generosity.

There was absolutely no need for them to be so selfless and give me that amount of money, let alone a check at all.

And now here I am, visiting my best friend in North Carolina, forever grateful for the kind act of that family. I hope that somebody I can be as selfless and giving as they were to me that day.
